He was a member of the Isle of Wight County school board who circulated inflammatory e-mails about First Lady Michelle Obama. From Opposing Views:
After circulating racist emails about Michelle Obama, a Virginia school board member is attempting to ignore calls for him to resign.
The string of emails — dating back to January 2012 — were sent by Herb DeGroft… The school board voted Thursday 4 to 1 to officially request that DeGroft resign. (The nay vote, of course, was from the offender himself.)
One of the troubling and incredibly racist emails shows shirtless African female warriors, captioned, “Michelle Obama’s high school reunion.” Another email from DeGroft suggested that Michelle Obama had been paid $50 to appear in National Geographic.
An attempt to recall Mr. DeGroft was judicially invalidated. The recall effort was five valid signatures short of what was required. He served out his term.
Congressman Joe Wilson
He shouted “You Lie,” during President Obama’s first State of The Union address.
He continues to serve as the Assistant Republican Whip and is a member of the house committees on Armed Services, Education and Workforce, and Foreign Affairs.
Shirley Sherrod, Van Jones, Sen. Elizabeth Warren and HHS Secretary Katherine Sebelius were cheerfully thrown under the bus, but individuals like Mr. DeGroft and Mr. Wilson paid no political price for their actions.
That’s a problem.
I’m all for forgiveness. And I’m no advocate for the kind of bullying that Gov. Christie’s become known for. I don’t want a climate where no critiques can be brought forward without invective. (e.g., some of the actions of the Anti Defamation League) But at the same time, the refusal to exact any price at all, including simple acknowledgment of what was done seems equally unhealthy and potentially ruinous.
At a minimum, let’s agree to just remember the time. And if we decide to take action, let’s commit to the long haul.
But he who endures to the end shall be saved. (Matthew 24:13)
