Bringing Your Characters To Life

I recently revisited this awesome post from the dearly departed Script Frenzy’s Young Writers Program.

How many clever scripts have I read with dead characters? Too many. How many have I written? I’m not telling.

A recent writing exercise at Outfest’s delightful Fusion pop up reminded me that when are characters are fully alive and not just pieces on a chess board, we’ll write beyond our imaginations.  A very good thing since our imaginations are often limited, bombarded with driven and on intimate terms with the hackneyed and cliched.

(h/t to Eduardo Machado)

Think of a situation in which you were terrified.

Introduce a character. Introduce a second character. Have them play out a scene.
