Keep Hope Alive

I always liked Rev. Jesse Jackson’s slogan. Now I know why.

It turns out that not only hope but anger, resentment, and bitterness can be stoked to keep going as well. Human will is a remarkably powerful tool.

I once worked a gig in a very tough environment. The kind of place where people asked for prayer in the bathroom. In addition to the gig, I had long term stress from helping my mom with a chronic illness. It took a profound toll.

I’m still working to undo the damage. Sometimes responding normally to simple human kindness is tough. I’m always looking for the next blow. Worried about a trap or a doublecross.

I talked to a few folks recently who were sprung from the same environment. A few were still enraged by the difficulties they’d endured. The others were still emotionally tied to it.

Turns out that there’s a choice. You keep hope alive or you give place to rage and regret.
