Chimamanda Adichie on The Dangers of a Single Story (TED)

What a useful talk. It transcends race and culture.  It’s not just about Adichie’s perspective as a novelist.

My family is going through challenging times, in large part because some family members want to reduce us all to one story, despite our obvious and profound differences. They are acting, perhaps unconsciously, on a very powerful truth. Those who control the story, control the structure of thought, itself. Controlling a man’s thought is a whisper from controlling his mind.

Like fantasy, the single story enslaves. Multivocality liberates.

P.S.  TED Talks are now on Netflix. Wait a second to requisition the DVDs of last summer’s blockbuster, try streaming these every once in a while.
