Boys Will Be Boys

Banal Version

When questioned about the infidelity that led to his marriage, Shaquille O’Neal responded:

It’s a man thing, you wouldn’t understand.

Evil Version

When questioned about sexual abuse allegations, Jerry Sandusky responded:

“I could say I have done some of those things,” he said. “I have horsed around with kids I have showered (with) after workouts. I have hugged them, and I have touched their legs without intent of sexual contact.”

It’s sad to deceive others but sadder still to deceive ourselves. Joan Didion spoke of that well lit corner where we have to keep assignations with ourselves. I believe it is the quality of those meetings that determine the quality of our lives – not mistake free, but mistake repellent. ¬†And before we make that wrong move, let’s consider those around us who may suffer profoundly because of our missteps.

Boys will be boys? Not so much. Boys will be righteous? Feels right.
