Le plus ca change le plus c’est la meme chose.
I took a look at an old essay, Stand By Your Flag (1987), by Barbara Ehrenreich while I was cleaning last week.
“I must have had a half-dozen Norwegian backpackers and vacationing English nannies ask me that tiresome old question of why, if it was the Iraqis who hit the Stark, we decided to go after the Iranians.”
I don’t remember the Stark but I’m crystal clear about Osama Bin Laden chilling in Pakistan while we bombed Iraq and Afghanistan back into prehistory.
The faces change but the game remains the same. If this isn’t ultimately about articles that can be updated several times over 20 years by changing a few names and giving journalists a day at the beach, we have to get smarter.
I don’t care about how we got here anymore. I want to figure out how not to go back.
Not the answer. Not caring about how we got here builds a superhighway back to the same failures.
