Rape and Sexual Exploitation

Tony Pastor’s words touched me deeply.  There is nothing, nothing like a solid, progressive man of color.  They are friends and allies who make lasting gains  possible. Mr. Pastor speaks bravely and truthfully, and hence, powerfully.

Know that I am in no way suggesting that rape and sexual exploitation are  only problems for black men. While black men are disproportionately represented in crime statistics, (a) I’ve seen how privilege and color can result in warnings rather than an arrests and (b) they are also more often the victims of crime. We do very little to address either factor. The justified fear that black men feel from both cops and criminals has to be acknowledged.

At the same time, disturbing events like the serial gang rape in Cleveland, TX, and the horrendous assault against a mother and son in Dunbar Village, FL where African American men assaulted respectively a Latina girl and Haitian Americans raise troubling questions and despair. Who can we be to each other if allow monsters to be cultivated then let loose in our midst?

In some ways, I’m more disturbed by the women who defend these attacks than the men. They are also at risk for sexual assault.  How can they?

Tough stuff but worth fighting for over the longest haul.

Everything can’t be solved at once.  Circulating these ideas is a start.
