Bayard Rustin, The Tea Party and the Patriot Act

“As a minority community, we need friends to build a majority in both public opinion and in Congress.”

How right Rusin was.

House Republicans suffered an embarrassing setback Tuesday when they fell seven votes short of extending provisions of the Patriot Act, a vote that served as the first small uprising of the party’s tea-party bloc.

Limits on the overreaching Patriot Act?  That’s a good thing.  Brought to you by the Tea Party.

Wha -at?

Political maturity, as defined by Rustin, means that everyone define their permanent interests then make (sometimes temporary) alliances based on those interests.

It’s a stretch for me.  I hated the abuses of the Patriot Act. But I never thought I would find common cause with  party that has too many former segregationists and racists in its ranks for my taste.

We live and we learn.
