Boehner said the bill would ”make clear that taxpayer funding of elective abortion will not be the policy of this government,“ noting that current law ”does not reflect the will of the American people.”
Um … no.
Which Americans is Boehner talking about?
A new Gallup Poll, conducted May 7-10, finds 51% of Americans calling themselves “pro-life” on the issue of abortion and 42% “pro-choice.” This is the first time a majority of U.S. adults have identified themselves as pro-life since Gallup began asking this question in 1995.
This effort isn’t just about a woman’s right to choose. It’s an announcement that House Republicans intend to reignite and exploit the culture wars while defunding health care reform, etc. Don’t let them. The direction is forward. No matter how tired you think you are, get ready to engage the public sphere. I have to believe that challenging faulty logic and outright lies can change our politics. Looking for political vision and leadership from someone else, somewhere else has failed again and again. I support the President but given recent administration moves on national security and Wikileaks, and the continued capitulation to blue dog democrats, it’s clear that squeeky wheels are in order.
The heck with the future. It’s the present that’s the problem. The decline of the middle class, the economy, health care, education. Support and fund advocacy and activism.
