Many black communities are under siege.

The numbers are so bad that they are overwhelming.  Is it worse in many parts of Africa?  Of course, but we live in the west.

The criminals in the black community.  Mostly men.  Some women.

Who will cry for black men who are most often the victims of crime?  Or do they deserve it?

Criminals aren’t aliens.

Most are not monsters.

If they are damaged beyond repair, then the rest of us are screwed.

There isn’t enough space or money to lock them up forever and a day.

You can’t get run far enough.  Heard of residential re-segregation?

Ignoring/Avoiding?  Tried that.  Didn’t work.

We know these people.  These are our brothers, sisters, friends, relatives, neighbors, co-workers.

We need a new vision — valuing black life in all times and circumstances.  In actions not slogans.

Non black people don’t have to agree.  We have to make changes.  Tupac was right – even though he didn’t do it.

Change how we treat each other

Change what we eat

Change how we live

Solving the political thing won’t fix it all.  Entrepreneurship isn’t the cure.  We can’t pray ourselves into irrelevance.  It will take vision and a sustained, multipronged effort.  We need folks who are in it for the long haul.  Who will do something that won’t directly benefit them and theirs but will benefit the unborn.

Kamala Harris, the San Francisco DA, has a mantra.  Let’s not just get tough on crime.  Let’s get smart on crime.

Let’s get smart and do smart.
