Who Are You Really Mad At?

Kanye West at the VMA

Kanye West at the VMA

After the VMA awards incident, President Obama called Kanye West a jackass.  I call Kanye sad and boorish.  His behavior was bizarre enough that it made me wonder if has crossed the line into alcoholism or depression.  I won’t play the comparison game with the behavior of other celebs but interesting that his behavior provoked such a strong response in our President.  However, I have to contrast that remark with the President’s very tepid response to a trivial pop culture event to Rep. Wilson and challenging Bush era abuses.

I think President Obama cannot allow himself to express real anger toward his political enemies.  I think that anger got displaced to Kanye West.  I think his focus, however momentary, on the Skip Gates affair stands in stark contrast with his and everyone else’s inability to find a response to the Birthers, Glenn Beck’s 9/12 movement, et al.

This goes way beyond President Obama.  Who and what are we really mad at?

Wow, thanks for pointing this out, Mildred! I wonder how long Obama will continue to dismiss race (last month’s comments about not wanting any more “turf wars” in New Orleans was a bit disturbing). In the few times that he has addressed race, he’s distanced himself from Jeremiah Wright and scolded black fathers across the country.

Perhaps he is like a lot of minority people… Scared to call out an overwhelmingly massive attacker. Assimilation and avoidance are easier. They get us to higher places. Obama is a polarizing case of double consciousness at play.

As for everyone else who is so mad: I honestly don’t think they know anything about Birthers, teabaggers, etc. You work at Chapman. I bet you would be hard-pressed to find many people who know that a lot of this counter-activism has roots in Orange County. Simply put, it is just easier to get indignant about dumb things like celebrity stunts.
