The Elusive Promise of the Web

Last night, I taught a case study on Lonelygirl15 the highly successful web series that ran from 2006-2008. I’ve also been thinking about Gemini Division, the web series starring Rosario Dawson.

Will the web simply enable more confessional, highly mediated “reality” programming?

Those series made me think about the ever receding promise of the net to open the door to new kind of stories and storytelling.  It’s easier than ever for independents to distribute their work but much harder for them to be found or to get paid.

Where are the older people? People of color from around the world? The non-nubile?

Crickets.

Things are quickly settling into the same old tropes as corporate entities buy up bandwith. And it’s only a matter of time before the net is taxed more directly. Government entities around the world are looking for pockets to pick – um, revenue enhancements.

Brave new world?
